Dracula

dramatized by Hamilton Deane & John L. Balderston
from Bram Stoker's world-famous novel

Directed by Bob Caruso
Stage Manager - Samantha Silver

This classic play, the one from which all subsequent theatrical and movie versions of the novel derive, is set in 1927 in a sanatorium outside London. Lucy Seward, the daughter of the director of the sanatorium has come down with the same strange anemia that killed her friend Mina. Her father has sent for his friend Dr. Van Helsing, a specialist in exotic diseases, to consult on the case. Meanwhile, the mysterious new owner of ruined Carfax Abbey, Count Dracula, has taken a strong interest in Lucy's well-being. Will the truth be discovered in time to save Lucy's life? This classic tale of horror and vampires is perfect for the Halloween season.

Cast of Characters

Director's Note: Each one of these is a character, not a caricature

Count Dracula: (male, 30-40) Tall, mysterious, seductive; speaks with a Continental accent (not Bela Lugosi!)

John Harker: (male, mid 20s) Typical young Englishman, handsome and excitable; Lucy's fiancée.

Dr. Seward: (male, 50s) A psychologist, proprietor of the sanatorium, lives in a world of textbooks and patients, not a man of action or force of character; Lucy's father.

Abraham van Helsing: (male, 50s) Professor from the Continent, direct in manner, expert on exotic diseases and folk legends and practices.

Renfield: (male, 20s -50s) A patient at Dr. Seward's sanatorium with an unusual fondness for flies. Not a setreotypical madman.

Lucy Seward: (female, early 20s) Beautiful daughter of Dr. Seward, engaged to Harker, serious in manner, under the control of Dracula for much of the play.

Maid: (female, any age) Typical maid part, can be played many ways; part of comic relief.

Attendant: (male, any age) Works in sanatorium; rough, put upon, has a thing for the maid.
